{"id":7041,"date":"2026-04-07T18:12:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T16:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irccs.com\/lung-cancer-the-new-chemo-free-therapy\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T14:35:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T12:35:32","slug":"lung-cancer-the-new-chemo-free-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/lung-cancer-the-new-chemo-free-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Lung cancer: the new chemo-free therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>international KROCUS study<\/strong>, authored by. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/professionals\/vanesa-gregorc\/\" type=\"doctor\" id=\"766\">Dr. Vanesa Gregorc<\/a><\/strong>, oncologist and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/medical-area\/advanced-clinical-research-and-innovation\/\" type=\"medical-area\" id=\"4170\">Division of Clinical Research and Innovation<\/a> at INOC &#8211; Istituto Nazionale Oncologico Candiolo, paves the way for <strong>chemo-free therapy<\/strong> to treat non-small cell <a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/pathology\/lung-cancer\/\" type=\"pathology\" id=\"106\">lung cancer<\/a>, achieving disease regression in about <strong>80% of cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"the-incidence-of-lung-cancer-in-italy\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>The incidence of lung cancer in Italy.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, lung cancer is the <strong>third most common type of cancer in Italy<\/strong>, with about 45,000 new diagnoses each year. For those battling the most common form of this disease (accounting for 85 percent of cases), important news comes from the <strong>international KROCUS study<\/strong> itself, which bears the <strong>first signature of <a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/professionals\/vanesa-gregorc\/\" type=\"doctor\" id=\"766\">Dr. Vanesa Gregorc<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the study, the <strong>combination of two biologic drugs (fulzerasib and cetuximab) <\/strong>used as the first therapy is able to <strong>regress the tumor in 80 percent of cases<\/strong>, recording an <strong>average progression-free survival of 12.5 months<\/strong>, with many patients still on treatment years later. This remarkable result is achieved <strong>without the need for chemotherapy<\/strong>, providing patients with a more targeted and better tolerated treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"a-successful-challenge-against-tumor-resistance\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>A successful challenge against tumor resistance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), about <strong>13% have the KRAS G12C mutation<\/strong>, which for decades was considered an impossible target for drugs. &#8220;Although the new inhibitors have begun to show inhibitory effects on disease, resistance given by cancer cells remains a challenge: they can &#8216;reactivate&#8217; themselves by bypassing drug blockade. With this study, we have shown that concomitant inhibition with two drugs can overcome resistance mechanisms as already shown in preclinical studies at INOC,&#8221; explains <a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/professionals\/vanesa-gregorc\/\" type=\"doctor\" id=\"766\"><strong>Dr. Gregorc<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"quality-of-life-and-future-prospects\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>Quality of life and future prospects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to its efficacy in regressing the disease, a key aspect of this new therapy is its <strong>high tolerability<\/strong>. Unlike other drugs in the same category, <strong>fulzerasib <\/strong>does not cause <strong>the severe liver or intestinal toxicities <\/strong>that often force patients to discontinue or reduce treatment. Side effects are limited to <strong>manageable skin reactions<\/strong>, allowing the patient to continue treatment with greater peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of these extremely encouraging results, the research is not stopping. In fact, a larger clinical trial, called <strong>Phase 3<\/strong>, is already being designed that will directly compare this biologic combination with <strong>the current standard of care (chemo and immunotherapy).<\/strong> The goal is to permanently change <strong>the treatment algorithm <\/strong>for this disease, making this targeted approach the main choice for treating patients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The international KROCUS study, authored by.
