{"id":9335,"date":"2026-06-12T14:53:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T12:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inoc.it\/prostate-cancer-screening-inocs-project-for-early-diagnosis\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T13:14:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T11:14:47","slug":"prostate-cancer-screening-inocs-project-for-early-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/prostate-cancer-screening-inocs-project-for-early-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Prostate Cancer Screening: INOC&#8217;s Project for Early Diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study conducted in Piedmont\u2014which counts <strong>INOC (the Candiolo National Cancer Institute)<\/strong> among its sponsors <strong>\u2014<\/strong> shows that more than half of men with <strong>elevated PSA levels can <\/strong> <strong>avoid unnecessary biopsies thanks to <\/strong>the integration of magnetic resonance imaging and risk calculators.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"why-is-prostate-cancer-screening-necessary\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>Why Is Prostate Cancer Screening Necessary?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Italy, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/pathology\/prostate-cancers\/\" type=\"pathology\" id=\"101\">prostate cancer<\/a> <\/strong>is the <strong>most common<\/strong> cancer among men, with approximately <strong>41,000 new cases<\/strong> each year. Despite its high incidence, unlike other cancers such as breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer, <strong>there is<\/strong> still <strong>no<\/strong> organized national screening program. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"what-is-the-proscreenmri-protocol\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>What is the PROscreenMRI protocol?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address the lack of an organized national screening program, <strong>PROscreenMRI<\/strong> was launched\u2014a pilot study sponsored by <strong>INOC (Candiolo National Cancer Institute)<\/strong> and<strong> <\/strong>by<strong> the Reference Center for Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention (CPO) in Piedmont<\/strong>,<strong>by the San Luigi Gonzaga University Hospital in <\/strong>collaboration with<strong> the TO5 Local Health Authority<\/strong>, with the goal of evaluating a new model of <strong>early diagnosis<\/strong> that is more <strong>effective<\/strong>, appropriate, and sustainable.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, funded by <strong>the Piedmontese Foundation for Cancer Research<\/strong> through the 5&#215;1000 program and by <strong>the Ministry of Health<\/strong> (Corrente Research Funds), involves men<strong> between the ages of 55 and 65 residing <\/strong>in the ASL TO5 district.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The citizens selected following the identification of eligible individuals were contacted by the Screening Evaluation and Organization Unit<strong>of ASL TO5 and <\/strong>were invited to undergo a PSA test; if their results exceeded the reference ranges, automatically referred for further diagnostic testing through a process that combines multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and risk calculators at <strong>INOC\u2014the Candiolo National Oncology Institute.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"preliminary-results\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>Preliminary Results<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preliminary data collected between February 2025 and March 2026 confirm the effectiveness of the new approach. Among more than <strong>11,000 men<\/strong> invited to participate in the screening, the protocol made it possible to more accurately identify patients who needed to undergo invasive procedures. Specifically, among the <strong>146 participants who <\/strong>completed the entire diagnostic process, <strong>63% were referred for simple follow-up<\/strong>, avoiding biopsies that would have been performed under traditional protocols based exclusively on PSA. At the same time, the system demonstrated high accuracy in identifying clinically significant tumors.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis study represents a crucial step toward establishing an organized prostate cancer screening program,\u201d says <strong>Dr. Vittoria<\/strong> <strong>Grammatico<\/strong>, head of the Screening Evaluation and Organization Unit at ASL TO5. \u201cOur goal is to evaluate not only the clinical effectiveness of the screening pathway but also its integration into public health programs, ensuring equitable access and high-quality care for citizens.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr.<\/strong> <strong>Daniele<\/strong> <strong>Regge<\/strong>, a radiologist and the study\u2019s principal investigator at <strong>INOC\u2014the National Oncology Institute of Candiolo<\/strong>\u2014adds: \u201cFrom a radiological standpoint, incorporating MRI into the screening process allows for a much more accurate characterization of lesions.\u201d Preliminary data, in fact, confirm that it is possible to improve the identification of clinically significant tumors while avoiding unnecessary tests. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span  id=\"a-personalized-journey\" class=\"h2_anchor\"><\/span>A personalized journey<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/it\/doctor\/francesco-porpiglia-2\/\" type=\"doctor\" id=\"1656\">Prof. Francesco Porpiglia<\/a>,<\/strong> director of the university department of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inoc.it\/en\/medical-area\/urological-surgery\/\" type=\"medical-area\" id=\"148\">Urology<\/a><\/strong> at INOC\u2014the Candiolo National Oncology Institute\u2014this is a personalized screening program that stands out for<strong>its integration of PSA, MRI, and risk calculators<\/strong>, enabling the development of a specific diagnostic strategy for each patient.
